Fasting

Did you know fasting is mentioned 77 times, 2 more times then baptism?
A definition of fasting is a follower of the Messiah's voluntary abstinence from food for spiritual purpose. A fast can begin with the giving up of one meal, one day, three day, seven day, twenty one day, or forty days.
There are other types of (fasting) on a broader note voluntary denial of a normal function, other people, from a type of media, a telephone, ect. In order to become more absorbed in a time of spiritual activity.
The bible only refers to fasting from food.
Matthew 4:2; (Luke 4:2) And when Hs had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward hungry. Yahushua drank water.
A partial fast is a limitation of the diet (Daniel 1:12), pulse is vegetables. John the Baptist, Matthew 3:4 ate honey and locust.
An absolute fast is the avoidance of all food and water. Ezra 10:6; Esther 4:16; Acts 9:9
Two supernatural fast recorded in the bible are Moses Deuteronomy 9:9, and EliYahu Kings 19:8 both on the same mount.
There are private fasts Matthew 6:16-18, congregational Joel 2:15-16; Acts 13:2, national II Chronicles 20:3; Nehemiah 9:1; Esther4:16; Jonah 3:5-8.
Under the old covenant Israel was commanded by Yahuweh to fast the Day of Atonement. Yahushua implies fasting in Matthew 9:15.
Fasting is expected by Yahushua, Matthew 6:16-18.
Fast with a purpose.

1 To strengthen prayer Ezra 8:23; Daniel 9:3; Nehemiah 1:4; Acts 13:3

2 To Seek Yah's Guuidance Judges 20:26, Acts 14:23                                                                  

 3.To express grief  I Samuel 1:11-12; I Samuel 20:34                                                         

 4.To seek deliverance or protection II Chronicles 20:3-4; Ezra 8:21-23

5.To express repentance and a return to Yah. I Samuel 7:6; Jonah 3:5-8
6.To humble yourself before Yahuweh I Kings 21:27-29
7.To express concern for Yahuweh's work Nehemiah 1:3-4, Daniel 9:3
8.To minister to the needs of others Isaiah 58:6-7
9.To overcome temptation and to dedicate yourself Matthew 4:1-11
10.To express love and worship Luke 2:37

Mark 9:29 for power of prayer and fasting combined.

Fasting is an act of faith like tithing, if you can't do it in faith; Romans 14:22-23
22 Hast thou faith? Have it to thyself before YAH. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he allow. 23 And he that doughteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
